El Hormiguero vs. American Talk Shows

El Hormiguero (The Anthill) is a show hosted by Pablo Motos on Antena 3. This was the talk show I referenced to in one of my previous posts:

I find this talk show interesting because it is formatted in a similar fashion to most late night talk shows in America, such as Conan, Lopez Tonight, The Late Show with David Letterman, etc. However, I feel as though a lot of what is done on the show seems to be changed to adapt to the cultural differences in Spain. One thing all of these shows have in common is that they feature guest interviews. Most of the American shows host American Hollywood stars, but El Hormiguero has both Spanish and American stars in its show. What surprises me is that these stars range from a lot of different platforms (stars include Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, Will Smith, and Jackie Chan). After watching a couple of videos with American stars, I find it funny when the actor give blank stares to Pablo as he speaks to them in Spanish and you could tell they are waiting to hear a translation.

Another interesting aspect is who hosts the show along with Pablo. The name El Hormiguero comes from the two puppet ants who join Pablo: Trancas and Barrancas. These ants usually deliver the punchlines and jokes throughout the interviews and have a segment on the show called "The questions that Pablo couldn't ask." During this segment, the ants ask a couple of riskier questions, but the guests usually take this lightly and continue on with the show. This show is also known for Pablo and other reoccurring hosts performing science experiments or dares on the show. Sometimes the guests join in on the experiment and it adds to the comedic aspect of the show. This is something that generally isn't done on other late night shows, possibly because it isn't something that wouldn't interests us as much in America.

Also the addition of puppets as hosts is something that seems more like for a children's show than a late night talk show. However with some research I have found out that there was another show that involved puppets on Canal Cuatro, where puppets delivered the news. However this show has been cancelled and now Trancas and Barrancas do a parody of this show where they comedically talk about recent news and politics. Most American late night shows will joke about the news, but this is usually done only in the beginning of the show or throughout the interviews.

Through observing this show I've noticed the difference in humor that exists in different countries. I have heard a couple of the jokes done on the show and I find some of them funny, but there are a couple that I don't understand but my host family does. Also, the inclusion of the dares along with the puppets is something extremely different that I haven't seen in American television. It seems to be working for them however as I heard it won an International Emmy in 2011 for best non-scripted entertainment. Below you'll find a portion of Miley Cyrus' appearance on the show:
